Tacos and Beer: Wynwood Restaurants and Bars That Rule the Scene.

The hottest places to eat and drink in Miami are in Wynwood, the artsy neighborhood known for its hip galleries, smart eateries, and cool watering holes. Three of the most notable Wynwood restaurants and bars specialize in your favorite casual dining and late-night staples: tacos and beer.

Coyo Taco

While in most of the country, tacos are the street food du jour, in Miami, tacos have been the preferred street food for the past century. Case in point: Wynwood’s coolest taqueria, Coyo Taco, has lines down the block for its Mexican fare. The low-key joint smashes the avocados for your guacamole to order, hand-presses its corn tortillas daily, and even offers a menu with extensive vegetarian options, like quinoa falafel and grilled cactus (napoles). Grab some seats at Coyo Taco’s long, wooden communal table and send your most trusted friend up to order local taco faves such as the pastor de pollo (chicken, roasted pineapple, and onion) or the pulpo (charred octopus, salsa, and pickled jalapeños). Split some sides with your friends like the frijoles borrachos (pinto beans, bacon, and beer) and the esquite–grilled corn that’s slathered with chipotle aioli and cotija and conveniently cut off of the cob. Wash it all down with a round of fruity agua frescas spiked with tequila.

Kush

Pop into the eco-friendly Kush for some down-home Miami cooking and serious craft beer. Kush’s food is sourced from local farms (even the ground beef for its burgers), and everything is made from scratch daily, including the ketchup. Kush has 18 taps—many of which are local brews and rotate regularly—plus dozens of bottled beers from around the world. Order a round of seasonal brews, and then snack on some fried alligator bites, which are seasoned with spicy Old Bay and come with a creamy garlic mayo, or the Frita burger topped with guava jelly. Finish with a slice of house-made key lime pie that comes in a special pecan-and-graham-cracker crust that you won’t find in any other Wynwood restaurants.

J Wakefield Brewing

Let your geek flag fly at J Wakefield Brewing, a Wynwood brewery with a comic book theme. Here you’ll find depictions of superheroes and Star Wars characters—and some of the tap handles are designed to resemble light sabers. The tasting room’s hardware skews industrial—cast-iron piping, steel countertops, and chandeliers made from recycled wine barrels, and, like any good Wynwood property, J.W.B.’s walls are covered with graffiti murals. John Wakefield, the nerdy brewmaster of J.W.B., started out as an award-winning home brewer and became so popular that he was able to crowd-fund the money needed to open this industrial-scale brewhouse. On a warm day (it is Miami, after all), visit the taproom and taste some tropical craft brews like Grilled Pineapple Berliner Weiss, Dragon Fruit Passion Fruit Floridaweisse, and their sour mango witte. And don’t forget to ask about the daily brewery tours.

After trying these three joints, Wynwood will definitely call your name for more. Another great way to experience the neighborhood is to book a Wynwood food tour, and savor the flavors of Miami.
